Scholarship Fund Awards

Since 2003, over 30 outstanding Hispanic students from area high schools have been awarded scholarships to continue their education and to allow them to reach their life goals. The scholarship program represents an important strategy in supporting Hispanic peoples participation in the community.

The many exceptional young scholars that have benefited from Hispanic Alliance scholarships will be our leaders in the future. One such young person, Marta, has overcome tremendous hardships in her young life. Marta moved to the United States with her family in 2000, not speaking English. Her father did not receive any formal education and her mother left school after the fourth grade. In a short time, Marta rose to the top of her high school class and became involved in many volunteer and extra-curricular activities. Marta also works part-time and carries a heavy load of family responsibilities. With the assistance of a Hispanic Alliance scholarship, she is now attending college and seeks to earn a PhD in psychology.

The Starfish fund

The Starfish Fund has assisted over 500 individuals in crisis with needs including medical care, prescriptions and medical equipment, housing, and utilities through a micro-grant program. It is a collaborative program with other community organizations. Starfish funds are delivered through community social service and health care agencies and augment other resources available or often fill a need for which there is no other source of support. Starfish grants have helped people in many ways: many children miss or perform poorly in school because of uncontrolled asthma and allergies, uncorrected vision problems and untreated dental decay. Starfish grants have provided peak flow meters, allergy medications, and dehumidifiers to asthmatic children, glasses and hearing aids, and critical oral health care to children.

A small investment results in a big impact on these childrens lives. Ines was struggling to provide for her family on the limited income from her job. An accomplished seamstress, she was provided a Starfish grant in order to purchase a sewing machine. Now Ines takes orders for sewing jobs from community members and the income helps her family, also contributing to Ines self-sufficiency and pride.
